Pot Belly Brewery Trip 6th April 2010
The Pot Belly Brewery in Kettering was established some 5 years ago, and produces such ales as Made in Britain, Yellowbelly, Beijing Black and Aisling (pronounced Ashling). Three beers were available for sampling and in addition to the tour of the brewing area we were enlighted as to the potential use of Lederhosen as part of the brew process. Part of the deal was a Fish & Chip supper which went down very well with a pint of bitter. As this was such a success we plan to visit some of the other micro-breweries in the area.
Welford Choral Events Sunday 11th April 2010
55 members
of a "Come and Sing" Chorus sang Puccini's "Messa di Gloria"
in St Mary the Virgin, Welford, on Sunday April 11th 2010, and raised approximately
£500 for Church Funds. Members of the Chorus were drawn from local Choral
Societies including The Market Harborough Choral Society. Performed locally
several times over the last 10 years or so, it remains a favourite of Choral
Societies despite contaiing several difficult passages which demand concentration
and sensitivity.
Puccini wrote the Messa di Gloria at the age of 18 as his graduation thesis,
and this imposing and beautiful sacred piece of music remained 'undiscovered'
for many years until found through the efforts of an American Priest who found
the score in 1951 when researching the composer. Puccini was born in Lucca and
it was here that Father Dante del Fiorentino's searches produced the long forgotten
score. Performed in Chicago in 1952, and then in Naples in December the same
year by the Orchestra e Coro Scarlatti di Napoli, this was some 72 years after
the first performance in Lucca.
The piece is formed in five movements; Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus
Dei. The last is particularly poignant and so gentle as to be considered by
many as anti-climactic. It leaves an atmosphere of reflection and contemplative
peace as the final "Dona Pacem" fades into silence.
